Scholarship Information

If any students in the meteorology club would like to compete for a scholarship here are four scholarships that are available to undergraduate students through the NWA and NOAA.

Program Description:
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings (Hollings) scholarship program is designed to: (1) increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, and education and foster multidisciplinary training opportunities; (2) increase public understanding and support for stewardship of the ocean and atmosphere and improve environmental literacy; (3) recruit and prepare students for public service careers with NOAA and other natural resource and science agencies at the federal, state and local levels of government; and (4) recruit and prepare students for careers as teachers and educators in oceanic and atmospheric science and to improve scientific and environmental education in the United States.
The Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000 per year) for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position ($650/week) during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if reappointed, academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000) for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year. The internship between the first and second years of the award provides the Scholars with ‘‘hands-on''/ practical educational training experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities. Awards also include travel funds to attend a mandatory Hollings Scholarship Program orientation, conferences where students present a paper or poster, and a housing subsidy for scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship.
Eligibility Requirements:
• U.S. citizenship.
• Full-time status as a 3rd year student in a four-year program or a 4th year student in a five year-program in the upcoming Fall term in an accredited college or university within the United States or U.S. territories.
• Cumulative and semester/quarter GPA of 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) in all completed undergraduate courses and in the major field of study.
• Majoring in a discipline area related to oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, or education, and supportive of the purposes of NOAA's programs and mission, e.g., biological, social and physical sciences; mathematics; engineering; computer and information sciences; and teacher education.
Application Deadline:
• The application form will be available after October 1, 2007. The application deadline is February 9, 2008.
• Two academic references are required (see the application for the form), mailed by the referee, and must be received by February 9th.
• Official transcripts, mailed by the academic institution, must be received by February 9th.
• Applications will be accepted via e-mail or mail, references and transcripts must be mailed by the referee and academic institution, respectively. Please e-mail applications to StudentScholarshipPrograms@noaa.gov
• Applications or supporting materials will not be accepted by fax.

REU Information

Real-World Research Experiences at the National Weather Center The National Weather Center (NWC) in Norman, Oklahoma invites motivated undergraduate students from any major who are interested in a career in scientific research to apply for a 10-week summer research program. The Research Experiences for Undergraduates at the Oklahoma Weather Center is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation to the Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms.
Students participate in a 10-week research program during the summer under the supervision of mentors from the National Weather Center:
•     OU's Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms, School of Meteorology, Environmental Verification and Analysis Center, College of Geosciences, Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies, Oklahoma Climatological Survey, Center for Spatial Analysis, International Center for Natural Hazards and Disaster Research, Sasaki Applied Meteorology Research Institute, OU Supercomputing Center for Education and Research, and Department of Geography
•     NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory, Storm Prediction Center, National Weather Service Norman Forecast Office, Radar Operations Center, and Warning Decision Training Branch
Students will conduct research on such topics as: severe weather, tornadoes, numerical weather prediction models, atmospheric radiation, climatological studies, dryline studies, and more. Students will prepare and present papers reporting the results of their research.
Student research will be supplemented by tours, field trips, and lectures to produce a well-rounded experience that will give students the opportunity to judge whether a career in research is for them. Housing, travel allowance, and a stipend will be provided.

REU Summer 2007
The 2007 application was due February 14, 2007. Selections were made when the Selection Committee met on March 12.
Eligibility: you must be a US citizen or permanent resident and enrolled in an undergraduate degree program to be eligible for this program. If you are graduating from a community, tribal, or other 2-year college you are eligible so long as you have enrolled in a 4-year institution to complete an undergraduate degree.
