StormFest is a Success!

Thank you to all of the volunteers who participated in this three day event at the Carnegie Science Center! This could not have been done without your help. Skywarn Training Comes to Cal U
Thursday, April 24, 2008 - Eberly Room 110 - 6:30 PM

The Dept. of Earth Sciences, the Southwest PA Chapter of the AMS and Cal U are proud to host a Special Washington County Skywarn Training session to not only the university but the public as well! John Darnley, a Hydrometeorological Technician, from the NWS in Pittsburgh will provide the necessary information to become a Skywarn spotter. More info to come.
**Note** Students registered for the 2008 Storm Chase are required to attend this training.

Cal U Welcomes Dr. Manda Adams
Friday, April 25, 2008 - Eberly Room 110 - 2 PM

Dr. Manda Adams received her bachelor degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and her Masters and Doctorate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Dr. Adams is associated with the Geography Department and the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Department at Calgary. Her educational background is as a meteorologist with a specialty in numerical modeling of mesoscale processes and phenomena. Her research projects include Wind Energy Impacts, Foothill Climate Array, Antarctic Meteorology, and Alberta Air Quality Assessment.

 

Chapter Poster Wins 3rd Place!

Congratulations to the Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) for winning 3rd place for their club poster at the 88th Annual AMS Conference in New Orleans, LA! Fall Colloquium Came to a Close with Brian Persons

The Fall Colloquium came to a close with our final speaker Brian Persons. Mr. Persons is the Executive Director for the Naval Systems Engineering Directorate and Chief Technology Officer for the Naval Sea Systems Command. Fall Colloquium Series Continues with Dr. Scott Sheridan

The Fall Colloquium series continues with Dr. Scott Sheridan from Kent State University on Friday, October 12, 2007. Sheridan will be speaking on "Heat Mortality - Forecasting and Mitigation." Light the Night Walk at Heinz Field

The Meteorology Club attended the Light the Night Walk at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, PA. The walk serves as a fundraiser for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The evening consists of many activities before the walk including free souveniers and food. Following the walk, a fireworks show was presented to the participants. The Meteorology club attended their annual Pittsburgh Pirates Game on Friday, September 28, 2007. The night consisted of College Night as well as Fireworks Night to wrap-up their 2007 season.



Fall Colloquium Series Begins
Friday, September 21, 2007

The Fall 2007 Colloquium series began on Friday, September, 21, 2007 with Mr. Bryan Hughes from KGAN in Cedar Rapids, IA. Bryan presented on "Broadcast Meteorology and Forecasting - A Midwestern Perspective." He provided a great talk with audience participation as well.

2008 Storm Chase Information
Registration Due: Friday, March 7, 2008
Course: May 13 - 23, 2008

Registration for the 2008 Storm Chase running from Tuesday, May 13 - Friday, May 23 as begun! Please turn your summer registration forms in to Dr. Kauffman by Friday, March 7, 2008. This field course is a 10 day, 3-credit, excursion through the Plains states with an emphasis on the atmospheric principles of severe weather. The Cal U Weather Center issues forecasts for the Southwest Pennsylvania region Monday through Friday during the academic year.  Forecasts will not be updated during holidays and university breaks.  During severe weather events the Cal U Weather Center will issue special weather statements.
