The California University of Pennsylvania Department of Earth Sciences is working in collaboration with the Carnegie Science Center to present something new to Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania! StormFest, a weekend at the Carnegie Science Center, is devoted to all realms of the Earth Sciences. StormFest will be held at the Carnegie Science from Friday, February 29, 2008 to Sunday, March 2, 2008. Friday (Day 1) has been devoted to provide educational, hands-on activities for students in grades 5-8. Fun activities will be included, many include food! These activites will help middle school students understand the many processes of the Earth that we live on! Associated activites will include topics like meteorology, hydrology, geology and much more! Come see Major John Gordon, a "Hurricane Hunter", as he quizzes your knowledge with "Weather Jeopardy!" The activities will take place from 9 Am - 2 Pm on Friday, February 29, 2008! Saturday (Day 2) is open to the public and contains many of the same activities from Day 1. Saturday provides a different approach that is focused on the family and the public. Would you like to know how the atmosphere works, or how the earth system works? This would be your time to find out and learn about the Earth that we live on! Come see Major John Gordon, a "Hurricane Hunter", as he presents his experiences through many hurricanes like Hurricane Katrina. Activities will take place from 10 Am - 4 Pm on Saturday, March 1, 2008! Sunday (Day 3) has been devoted to a professional meteorology conference provided by the California University of Pennsylvania Meteorology Club and the Southwest Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Meteorological Society. Speakers will include Jamie Rhome from National Hurricane Center (NHC), Kevin Scharfenberg from the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) and Bob Hamilton from the National Weather Service in Buffalo, NY. Amongst these professional speakers, college students from around the area will also present their latest research via talks and posters. A student paper competition will be held, and the winner will win a cash prize of 100 dollars! We encourage college students to register with their research abstracts. This is your time to present your research ideas to the professionals and the public! This professional conference is open to the public! If you are interested in meteorology and would like to know about ongoing and upcoming research for this everyday changing science, we encourage you to register and attend! An online registration form is available for the Day 3 professional conference which contains a small fee of $20.00. |
