The Southwest PA Chapter of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) is proud to sponsor a visiting scientist, Paul Kocin. During his visit, Mr. Kocin will present his recent research concerning winter weather, as well as discuss notable winter storms to affect southwest Pennsylvania. In 2004, he and co-author Dr. Louis Uccellini, director of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), released the most comprehensive treatment on winter weather in the Northeast, entitled Northeast Snowstorms - Volume 1 – Overview and Volume 2 – The Cases. In February 2005, the two meteorologists also co-developed the Northeast Snowfall Impact Scale (NESIS) which classifies snowstorm intensity on a 1-to-5 scale ranking. As a winter weather expert, Mr. Kocin was most recently the face of “Storm Update” featured on The Weather Channel. Prior to joining TWC, Kocin worked as a meteorologist at NOAA’s Hydrometeorological Prediction Center at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction in Camp Springs, MD. Prior to that, he was a research meteorologist in the Laboratory for Atmospheres at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
Mr. Kocin graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in Atmospheric Science and later from Penn State University with a M.S. in Meteorology. Kocin is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society, contributing editor for Weatherwise magazine, and former chief editor of the Weather and Forecasting AMS journal. Due to Mr. Kocin’s national exposure, he has been featured on various national programs including World News Tonight, Discovery Channel, and National Geographic to analyze winter weather events. |
