Central Elementary School Brownsville Area School District East Millsboro, PA 4/18/2008 |

Outreach Administered by: On Friday, April 18, members of the Educational Outreach Committee visited Central Elementary School, in the Brownsville School District. The presentation included topics in the vast field of Earth Science including geology, meteorology and geography, and was given to a group of 4th and 5th grade gifted students. During the geology section, students had the opportunity to take a “core sample” of a layered cupcake, to simulate how geologists take cores of rock to learn about the Earth’s past. When talking about meteorology, students had the opportunity to be the forecaster and make their own weather map. There were certainly a variety of interesting maps, and there were several “severe weather fans” that put tornados all over their map! Finally, students tried their hand at being a cartographer, mapping the topography of a chocolate chip cookie “island,” while making sure to include a legend and scale, map essentials that were discussed. At the end of the presentation, students had a chance to try to “stump the weather student” in a question and answer session. |
