The Cal-U Weather Center is actively involved in providing an educational experience to students in grades K - 12.  Cal-U is active in participating in the G.L.O.B.E. program as well.  G.L.O.B.E. is a worldwide hands-on, primary and secondary school-based education and science program.  Through the program, students are able to gather valid scientific data, report this data to the internet where it can be used to make charts and graphs on a free web service, and it allows collaboration of students and scientists around the world.  Arrangements can be made for your school to visit the Cal-U Weather Center or one of our meteorology students can make an appearance at your school.  If you have any questions about the Educational Outreach program or if you would like to schedule a visit, please contact the members of our educational outreach committee.

On Friday, April 18, members of the Educational Outreach Committee visited Central Elementary School, in the Brownsville School District.  The presentation included topics in the vast field of Earth Science including geology, meteorology and geography, and was given to a group of 4th and 5th grade gifted students. During the geology section, students had the opportunity to take a “core sample” of a layered cupcake, to simulate how geologists take cores of rock to learn about the Earth’s past. When talking about meteorology, students had the opportunity to be the forecaster and make their own weather map.  There were certainly a variety of interesting maps, and there were several “severe weather fans” that put tornados all over their map! Finally, students tried their hand at being a cartographer, mapping the topography of a chocolate chip cookie “island,” while making sure to include a legend and scale, map essentials that were discussed. At the end of the presentation, students had a chance to try to “stump the weather student” in a question and answer session.
