Internship Stories
Katie Kirk, Junior
Summer 2009
Being a junior in the PGM program has given me the opportunity to go on two internships, which have been the best experiences of my life. When preparing for internships I look at two different criteria. First of which, would I like to work in that region of the country, and second, would I like to work at that type of facility.
My first internship was in Denver, Colorado at The Denver Country Club. There I was the head starter and outside operations assistant. I got to know a lot of the member off the first tee and I had the responsibility of the cart staff. Being out west was also a lot of fun. There is so much to experience, including the mountains, the fresh air, and golf! I thought it couldn't get any better for me.
My most recent internship was in Washington, D.C. at The Courses at Andrews Air Force Base.
There I was the operations manager and a level 2 intern. At Andrews I was in charge of the course when the head golf professional left. I opened and closed the course, made sure everyone was doing their jobs and I ran tournaments. Andrews ran 250-300 tournaments a year so our summer months were very busy. Working at a military golf course was an amazing experience and I feel that it is the kind of course I would like to work at after graduation.
In preparation for my third internship I am looking into working at a resort facility, hopefully in the south. Being in this program has given me many different experiences and opportunities that others might not get to experience. Also, the networking opportunities I have created give me a good feeling as graduation gets closer and I prepare to begin my career.
