League

College Hockey East, or better known as the CHE, evolved from the WPCHA 7 years ago. This league, which operates at the ACHA Division III level, serves Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and Western New York. The league is comprised of 10 teams spread out from across the region. Each team in the College Hockey East plays a 14-game schedule with an annual All-Star Game in January and league playoffs beginning in February. Eight of the ten teams in the CHE are also ACHA Division III teams and are ranked by a committee throughout the season. WVU and Pitt are members of the ACHA Division II. Currently Cal is in the North Division, along with Fredonia State, Penn State Behrend, Robert Morris University, and the University of Pittsburgh. Members of the South Division include Indiana University of PA-II, Penn State Altoona, Pitt-Johnstown, St. Vincent College, and West Virginia University D-II. California University of Pennsylvania will enter this season as the three-time defending CHE Playoff Champions, as well as the three-time defending Kaleina Cup Champions, which goes to the team with the best regular season record. The American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) is comprised of teams from all over the country. The ACHA is similar to the NCAA as both leagues use the NCAA rulebook. The ACHA divides the country into 4 regions and each region has approximately 25-35 teams. There are currently 131 teams in ACHA Division III. Cal is currently located in the Atlantic Region. The teams in each region are ranked throughout the season by a nine-member committee that is set up within each region. Each year the top four teams in each region meet in a selected location to compete for the Division III National Championship. Starting in the 2007-2008 season, each #1 and #2 seed at the conclusion of the final rankings have gained an automatic bid to the National Tournament.  Seeds 3 through 10 play in a single-elimination Regional Tournament to determine the final two seeds advancing to the National Tournament. Cal has earned a spot at the National Tournament three times in the past 5 years, including winning the Division III National Championship in 2007-2008. The College Hockey Association, or CHA, is a league that was formed in the summer of 2004. The CHA is associated with the CHE conference, but most of the teams are not affiliated with the ACHA in any division. With the growing numbers in college hockey throughout the area, new teams are forming every year. This league currently holds 10 teams. It is a breeding ground for new teams, as well as for CHE teams – such as Cal – with enough players to form a second team.   Currently, Allegheny, California-II, Canisius College, Carnegie Mellon, Case Western Reserve, CCAC, Hilbert College, Medaille, Pitt-Greensburg, and St John-Fisher comprise the CHA. Cal will be entering their fifth year in the CHA.  (http://www.collegehockeyeast.com/cha/ )

Women's ice hockey stands as one of the most enthralling, fast-paced, and oldest known games in organized female athletics. The earliest known photograph of women playing hockey dates back to 1890 and includes the daughter of Lord Stanley, of "Stanley Cup" notoriety.

Since those days women have taken to the ice in increasing numbers and at increasing levels of competition: playing on pee-wee teams, high school squads, NCAA D-1 squads (first in '00), the NHL (first in '92), and the Olympics (first in '98).

Yet at the turn of this century, women's ice hockey at the college club level was still largely unsupported. Nearly fifty women's non-varsity teams were in existence, playing in regional leagues or as independents when, in January of 2000, a dramatic step was taken.

The American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA), a league of approximately 150 men's teams across the U.S., announced the creation of the first national organization for women's collegiate non-varsity ice hockey. Fourteen clubs signed up and never looked back.

Following that 2000-2001 season's success, the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference (DVCHC) took notice. Founded in 1971, the DVCHC was (and still is) a well-respected regional hockey league with a tradition of only admitting teams that were members of the ACHA. Organizing the area's ACHA women's teams was a bold but logical next step.

In 2002 the DVCHC's newly formed Women's DII division played its first full season, tournament and an All-Star game.

Penn State (PA), University of Pennsylvania (PA), University of Maryland (MD), American University (DC) and Drexel University (PA) were the founding teams. That year the veteran "Lady Icers" of Penn State went undefeated, wrapping up a win in the playoffs and a trip to ACHA nationals.

Years later the DVCHC Women's DII has changed a bit but continues its tradition of fast-paced, competitive hockey with all eyes on the current seven team roster. Meanwhile the ACHA begins its fifth year of women's hockey with a current registration of 28 teams nationwide in Division II.

Last season was the first ever for the Cal Women’s program. They did not disappoint by winning the regular season and playoff DVCHC Division II Championships with an undefeated record. This season the women will move up to play in the DVCHC Division I against American University, University of Deleware, University of Maryland, University of Pennsylvania, University of Virginia, and West Chester University. They will still compete in the ACHA Division II, as all of the teams in the DVCHC participate in Division II nationally regardless of their division within the conference.

Together the leagues' partnership represents and promotes the highest level of college sportsmanship, competition, and fun both regionally and nationally, and stands in dedicated service to women's hockey around the world.  (http://www.dvchcwomenshockey.org/ )
