Cal U to Participate in The Big Event
CALIFORNIA, Pa. (March 5, 2007)...On Saturday, April 21, students
of Cal U will participate in The Big Event, a student-run service project
that has expanded to 71 universities across the nation. The Big Event began
at Texas A&M University in 1982 when student leaders saw a need to give back
to their surrounding community, a community that continually supported their
university. Joe Nussbaum, vice president of the Student Government
Association at Texas A&M, took the initiative to make others aware of this
need, and after a passage through the student senate, The Big Event was
born. After 25 successful years, The Big Event is now an annual happening
at 71 universities across the nation.
By completing service projects such as yard work, window washing
and painting, Cal U will join Texas A&M and 71 other universities in the
largest, one-day service project in the nation.
"We are trying to build a relationship with the community," says
Sara Ponteous, president of the Big Event Committee. "It's a way of thanking
them for their support."
Over the next few weeks, committee recruiters will be calling on
members of Cal U clubs and organizations to participate in the project, and
Cal students are more than welcome to participate, as well.
"We can't expect too much the first year," says Ponteous,"but
this is community service, and there are always people who are eager to get
involved."
