About Options

Mission

California University of Pa. is committed to providing quality education at a reasonable cost. Inherent in this commitment is the need to provide working conditions for employees and a safe living environment for students. The use of illegal drugs and the abuse of alcohol by university students impairs academic achievement and productivity. To counter this threat the university has developed an Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program.

What is Options?

Options is a student based program, providing education and information about alcohol and other substance issues for the Campus Community. Peer education allows students to educate fellow students about common alcohol and other substance issues.

What Can Options Do?

Options engages students by participating in substance awareness educational games all year round throughout campus.

Options can provide you with more information about the dangers and consequences of substance abuse.

Options can discuss alternatives for drinking and using drugs in social events.

Options works with Resident Life, GAMMA, SAI, and student athletes in planning and implementing on and off campus social events.

Options promotes social norm and student generated messages through various media outlets.

Options provides printed material on the effects, policies, and procedures or alcoholic abuse on Cal U's campus.

Options participates in statewide collegiate surveys and Cal U student surveys to gain a clear understanding of what our campus community needs.

Recent Activities

  • We have a new name! Say goodbye to Cheers, and hello to Options!
  • At the Health Fair this year, students had the opportunity to play Options Games.
  • During the Homecoming weekend, Options passed out Alcohol Awareness keychains to promote safety for the weekend.
  • Options also held various Thanksgiving activities.

Goals and Objectives

Goals

  • Reduce the abuse and misuse of alcohol and other drugs in the university community.
  • Provide a positive and drug-free learning environment for students.
  • Develop support and empower students who choose not to abuse alcohol or use illegal substances.
  • Provide students with information and awareness about the abuse of drugs and alcohol on campus.

The California Campus Community Coalition met once this semester. An article and facts were distributed to increase awareness were submitted to the California Times. There have been two meetings of the CUAAP (College University Alcohol Awareness Partnership) to work on collaborative efforts in the area of alcohol abuse. There are 5 local colleges/universities members of CUAAP.

Objectives

  • To be proactive in Alcohol and Other Drug awareness and information campaigns.
  • To provide students with information about alcohol and other drugs
  • To facilitate attitude and behavior change among student peer educators.
